The organization is still interested in the Internet.  Specifically they’re trying to understand how information flows through social networks.  To get a better understanding of the process the organization created the DARPA Network Challenge.

The idea is simple yet brilliant.  This Saturday DARPA will install 10 large red balloons in pedestrian locations throughout the continental US.  The first person or team to correctly locate all 10 balloons will win a healthy bounty – $40,000.

Anyone can participate, but those with the best chances have been organizing their team for weeks and recruiting scouts.  To win, competitors will have to monitor Twitter, Facebook, GyPSii and other social networks for the most current information, tips, and clues.

We hope to see some scouts using GyPSii and ask our users to keep their eyes open and tag anything they see.  So if you see any big red balloons floating in the sky be sure to take a picture and geotag it with GyPSii.

The most immediate update is the information box, now on the right hand side of the news feed.  This box is home to your information, including your location map, friends, rating and if you have a new message or friend request there will be a notice waiting for you there (aren’t you popular).

The ‘Explore’ button moved north and now sits among other top bar menu items. The feature itself has undergone a major overhaul in terms of both look and function.  When you open ‘Explore’ you’ll find two options, the list option and the new map-based interface, this means that virtually every action you take can be viewed on the map.  For example, as you scroll over the people, places, and points of interest, call outs will appear on the map.  All your results are based on your current location, but you can easily see what’s happening in other places by dragging and dropping your big red location pin – doing so will automatically adjust all the results based on the new location.  You can also narrow your searches solely to people, places, or points of interest or any combination of the three.  Check it out!

This is just one update to our webtop user experience – you can expect many more in the future.  We believe in evolving the web experience, so we never stop working to improve GyPSii. The iPhone app introduces our next generation user experience, taking advantage of the easy to use interface that has made the iPhone so popular.
